Make up for mature and menopausal skin
I’ve been a professional make-up artist for over ten years and have worked on films, television, music videos and fashion shoots. Much as I enjoy working with professional models, my real love is helping women of all ages feel beautiful in their own skin. As menopause approaches and oestrogen levels fall, this can change the texture of your skin. It may feel dry and flaky. Your complexion may look dull and fine lines begin to appear.
But if you follow a few simple tips, you can restore your natural glow. It’s just a matter of fine-tuning your skincare and make up routines to enhance your natural beauty.
Moisturise
To restore your skin’s glow, regular moisturising is essential. Always apply a moisturiser after cleansing your face and before make up to seal in hydration. Exfoliating a couple of times a week will help boost the effects of your moisturiser and add luminosity to your skin.
Use a primer
Once you’ve moisturised, don’t forget to add a primer, which will help lock in moisture. A primer will even out your skin texture, smooth fine lines and conceal enlarged pores. Some primers will also add a dewy glow to your skin.
Foundation – less is more
Avoid heavy foundation, particularly powder ones which can sit on your skin and accentuate fine lines. Try a tinted moisturiser, with an SPF of at least 15 and apply with your fingers to give a light, even coverage. This can be teamed with a creamy or liquid concealer to cover age spots, blemishes and dark circles under the eyes. Blend in well, using a concealer brush or your fingers.
Eyes that pop
Eye lashes and brows may lose some of their pigment, but this is easily remedied with a subtle lash and brow tint, which will last for up to 8 weeks. Using an eyelash curler will open up your eyes, making them look bigger and brighter, whilst keeping the look very natural. You could finish off with a touch of mascara to really make your eyes pop.
Luscious Lips
If you like a super bold lip, there’s no need to stop just because you’re a little older. A good lipliner will help create plumper looking lips and swapping heavy lipstick for a lip stain or tinted lip moisturiser will create luscious lips.
Cooling Spray
It’s worth keeping a handy cooling spray in your bag. Not only are these sprays great for refreshing your skin and maintaining hydration, they also provide instant relief when you’re having a hot flush. They cool and calm the skin, and better still can easily be applied over makeup while you’re on the go.
